Resolve to Organize your Yacht Documents

Posted by Andy Levy on Jan 8, 2015 6:21:44 PM

ResolveFor some, New Year’s resolutions can be tedious. The day after over-indulging (usually at a New Year’s Eve party), we promise ourselves to do better.

But it's not always easy to change our habits. In fact, a large number of people who make resolutions also end up breaking them.

According to an article on the website called Statistics: Top new year's resolutions & how many people keep them"40 to 45% of American adult make one or more resolutions each year."

But over time, many people give up on their resolutions. According to the article,
"The following shows how many of these resolutions are maintained as time goes on:
- past the first week: 75%
- past 2 weeks: 71%
- after one month: 64%
- after 6 months: 46%" has also written about the resolutions we most often make (and break). Here are the Top 10 Commonly Broken New Year's Resolutions:

  1. Lose Weight and Get Fit

  2. Quit Smoking

  3. Learn Something New

  4. Eat Healthier and Diet

  5. Get Out of Debt and Save Money

  6. Spend More Time with Family

  7. Travel to New Places

  8. Be Less Stressed

  9. Volunteer

  10. Drink Less

But even though many promises made on January 1 are soon broken, New Year’s resolutions can actually enhance our lives. For many people, the start of a new year can feel like a clean slate in which to begin a new project or change a less-than-optimal habit. In other words, the new calendar can give you an incentive to do something you’ve been meaning to do to improve your life. In fact, the article states that, "People who explicitly make resolutions are 10 times more likely to attain their goals than people who don't explicitly make resolutions."

Resolutions for yacht captains and crew.

Since the act of making a resolution is so powerful, why not use the new calendar as an incentive to meet your yacht-related goals? Some people use the New Year as a time to get organized. And for those who work on yachts, you know that organization is crucial.

You’ve always needed to keep track of yacht crew, vessel equipment, all types of inventory, and vessel maintenance schedules. But increasingly, you also need to complete, manage, submit and store important yacht paperwork and reports for MLC 2006 port control inspections and other maritime regulatory requirements.

Luckily, organizing the business of your yacht isn’t a new idea. There are some good yacht management software programs on the market that can provide the framework to organize everything on your vessel.

Sure, you need to be diligent about entering data into the program and keeping it up to date. But the rewards come when an MLC 2006 inspector comes on board your yacht and you have access to all requested documentation with a few quick clicks. Not to mention the time and effort saved when you have immediate access to equipment manuals, spares inventory updates, crew hours of work and rest, maintenance schedules, drawings, etc. because it is all held on your computer’s hard drive.

And here is a HUGE benefit of keeping your yacht paperwork organized using yacht management software: when it comes time to sell your vessel, your maintenance, crew, inventory, and any other history that you want to report on is available almost instantly. That is a big selling feature for many prospective buyers because it increases transparency and reduces guesswork about the vessel's past.

I have been working with Great Circle Systems since 2006 when they did the installation of all our networking and Internet communications equipment on our boat being built in Germany.

The equipment they recommended and installed was exactly as we required.  We have had extremely good results with all of their equipment and it has performed as they had advised.

I would highly recommend them to all fellow captains.
