Are you ready for the Inmarsat B and Mini-M EOL switch off?

sat_antennas.jpgBack in 2014, Inmarsat notified its customers that its legacy services Inmarsat M, Inmarsat D+, Inmarsat B, GAN and Mini-M would be phased out at the end of 2016, and replaced with faster and more efficient products. Chances are, your satellite services provider has already replaced the equipment reaching its end of life (EOL) date, but if you still haven’t upgraded to the newer equipment, now is the time to make the change.

On December 30, 2016, terminals associated with the retired services will be deactivated on the network, and all existing customers should migrate to the recommended replacement services. The new replacement services offer superior quality, higher speeds, and cost effective and flexible fees, all accessed through smaller and lighter terminals.

What Replacement Product Should You Choose for Your Legacy Inmarsat Equipment?

Inmarsat Fleet77 and Inmarsat B are the only ones that are GMDSS. The other ones are not, and therefore, they can be replaced with any service and terminal equipment that meets the end user’s need. Inmarsat C is still available and is a GMDSS system. Smaller and much cheaper, if a vessel needs GMDSS only then Inmarsat C can replace retiring legacy services.

Inmarsat Maritime M, Maritime Mini-M, and Maritime B terminals can be replaced by the new Inmarsat FleetBroadband service which offers multiple voice lines, texting, and broadband internet access with three different terminal configurations.

The FleetBroadband terminals have two clear advantages over their predecessors. One, the footprint is extremely compact, requiring little or no additional fabrication to replace the old terminals. Second, the rain fade on FleetBroadband terminals is so powerful it far outpaces competitive products, maintaining connectivity even in bad weather.

However, depending on the services your vessel actually uses and needs, FleetBroadband can be a very expensive service and several FleetBroadband customers have moved to VSAT (Ku) simply because it is cheaper and still provides unlimited data.

While it is true the up-front hardware is more expensive, in the long run the lower ongoing service fees of VSAT make up a greater cost benefit to the vessel.

I have been working with Great Circle Systems since 2006 when they did the installation of all our networking and Internet communications equipment on our boat being built in Germany.

The equipment they recommended and installed was exactly as we required.  We have had extremely good results with all of their equipment and it has performed as they had advised.

I would highly recommend them to all fellow captains.
