Superyacht Technology and the Internet of Things—5 Challenges

Posted by Amy Levy on May 13, 2015 2:40:00 PM

We talk a lot about how owners, guests, captains, and crew are increasingly more connected, with each person using multiple Internet-enabled devices on board every day. In fact, we started blogging about this idea back in 2013, when we posted Vessel Internet Bandwidth: Are you Addicted?.

But we haven’t really talked about how the physical items on board superyachts--and the vessels themselves--are becoming more connected. Today, many onboard gadgets and machines--from toasters and coffee makers to diesel engines and generators--are part of the Internet of Things (IoT). Even your Fitbit falls into the IoT category as it continually gathers data about your calories, steps and sleep to provide meaningful information back to you about your health (read more about wearables in Wearables—are they the Superyacht Computers of the Future?). You can see a list of more IoT examples from

Heads Up to Yacht Computer Users: Heartbleed Bug is Alive and Well

Posted by Amy Levy on Apr 21, 2015 6:18:16 PM

Last April, I posted  Protecting Your Yacht Computers from the Heartbleed Bug on the Yacht Technology Blog. The article describes the Heartbleed Bug as a security defect that can leave “secure” Internet web servers open to attack.

Heartbleed takes advantage of a flaw in the open-source OpenSSL cryptography library, which is often used to implement the Internet's Transport Layer Security (TLS) protocol. Left unpatched, your data (passwords, credit card data, Social Security numbers, etc.) is vulnerable to theft.

The 25 Worst Superyacht Computer Passwords And How To Avoid Them

Posted by Amy Levy on Mar 10, 2015 9:46:00 AM

When was the last time you changed your vessel computer passwords? If you are like most people, you’ve never changed any of them—you just keep signing up for new websites with the same password over and over again. You even use the same password, or combinations of passwords, to "secure" your devices.

3 Ways Yacht Management Software Makes Fractional Ownership Easier

Posted by Amy Levy on Aug 21, 2014 1:13:33 AM

Did you read OnboardOnline’s 1 August, 2014 post by Daniel Shea entitled Buying a Yacht: Has Fractional Ownership Found its Niche? It discusses the positives and negatives of fractional ownership, plus why the concept is currently more popular in the U.S. than in Europe.

One of the key points in the article is that "it’s more difficult to manage a yacht with so many different families and interests." So if you manage, captain or crew a fractionally owned vessel, you need to put a great deal of thought and effort into back-office management. That is to say, you need to juggle the desires of multiple owners and families on one vessel.

It sounds like an impossible task, but that’s where a good yacht management program can keep things sorted so crew can do their jobs, keep multiple owners happy, and not go crazy in the process. Read on to learn what yacht management software can do for you in a fractional ownership situation, or even if your yacht is individually owned.

I have been working with Great Circle Systems since 2006 when they did the installation of all our networking and Internet communications equipment on our boat being built in Germany.

The equipment they recommended and installed was exactly as we required.  We have had extremely good results with all of their equipment and it has performed as they had advised.

I would highly recommend them to all fellow captains.
